The main concept behind The Pocket Picker for Fine Art is a relatively simple one: identify pieces of fine art that, for one reason or another, have been undervalued, or simply overlooked, and make a profit by selling those works of art at their fair market value. This is what is known as picking. In theory, picking doesn't sound too difficult, does it? There is certainly no shortage of places from which an enterprising buyer can procure pieces of fine art for resale. But being successful as a picker requires much more than just showing up at an auction with your wallet, or sniping a painting on EBay at the last minute. Picking is really a discipline. It requires quick decision making and attention to detail, and later, once a purchase has been made, an effective use of your resources. It is in areas like these where author Brett Maly will serve as your wise counsel, and The Pocket Picker for Fine Art will remain as an invaluable resource long after you have finished reading the book for the first time. From a sheer readability standpoint, I found the book to be highly accessible. The Pocket Picker for Fine Art does an excellent job of mixing in humor with the wisdom and knowledge Brett has accumulated in more than twenty years within the fine art industry. And while Brett clearly states that the book has been crafted as a reference guide for those looking to make spontaneous, yet well-informed purchases, I feel that the book could have other applications. For example, somebody interested in beginning their own personal art collection would greatly benefit from the knowledge contained within this book.
Brett begins by discussing the items you should acquire in order to properly examine the pieces you come in contact with (a magnifying glass or loupe, a tape measure and gloves), as well as the places where you will begin searching for fine art to buy (auctions, estate sales, garage sales). From there, Brett focuses on the different mediums you will encounter while picking. The term medium refers to both the raw materials used, and the techniques employed in creating the final work of art. While many of us have been to an art gallery, or have owned a piece of fine art, I would guess that most of us have no idea just how many materials and techniques are available to an artist in the digital age. Knowing how to correctly identify the mediums employed in a work of art you are considering is vitally important, as these can have a big impact on the value of the piece being considered. Brett then takes this a step further, introducing an in-depth examination of where the various mediums fall relative to one another in a hierarchical "value pyramid". Before you really give any consideration to the artist, or the painting's subject matter, you will have a starting basis for valuation. For example, you will know that in most cases, an original oil on canvas will command a higher price than a watercolor, even if the subject matter is nearly identical, and the two compositions have been painted by the same artist. And understanding how the value pyramid works on this level will be of great benefit when you do not have a lot of time to examine a piece up close before an auction or estate sale begins. That thorough examination begins once you get your new piece home. This is where you will make full use of your tools. This is where you will be able to inspect the painting, the frame, and the back of the canvas. You will begin looking for embellishments, any other alterations made to the piece of art, or any signs of restorative work, as these can impact the value of the painting. Additionally, anything written on the back of the canvas could prove helpful in determining the name of the artist, or when and where it was painted. Brett also discusses the importance of provenance, and looking for tell tale signs of damage to the work that might have been hidden by the frame.
All in all, The Pocket Picker for Fine Art, which serves as Brett Maly's initial foray into the world of literature, is highly successful. It is easy to see why Rick Harrison of Pawn Stars continues to use Brett as his expert whenever a work of fine art needs authenticating, or valuation.

"The Pocket Picker for Fine Art" Brett K Maly Rick Harrison 9780991538003 Books Reviews
Altghough I am not overly interested in art this book peaks my interest and is written so that the novice can understand it. Very food.
I found this book to be a very helpful guide for the novice like me who might easily overlook the valuable art treasures to be found in estate and garage sales. I enjoyed the author's sense of humor and ability to simplify his professional knowledge as an art appraiser into this easy to read field guide. Well done, Brett!
Easy to use quick reference for trips to estate sales, auctions and antique malls. Recommended for your reference library.
Good all around review of how to tell valuable from not so valuable. A really small pocket book.
I am an artist among other things. I am interested in acquiring quality art at a fair price, mostly paintings.
The book was very helpful in this respect, and I recommend it to anyone interested in acquiring art.
Good book quick read and provides just enough information. Great starting place for picking art.
Brett has written a very useful, accessible book on what to look for while picking art. I had dabbled, but didn't really know what I was doing. This book taught me a lot and solidified a few things that I thought, but wasn't sure. Happy to learn not only general rules of value for broad categories of art, but also specific things like what an artist's proof was, how to store your art, etc. The book is also concise and easy to read in a few short sessions. It's written in the same friendly style that Brett uses on Pawn Stars. And the little caricatures are cute too!
