A shirtless old man trips over a dog. A heavily pregnant woman screams obscenities into the face of a stranger. Middle-class families politely nibble crust-less sandwiches beneath a giant, spray-painted phallus. This is the beach; unchanging, yet always something new. It's here that Millard makes his return, expanding on 2011's observations to spend a long, full summer walking among the tourists, vendors, and sweating locals.

But it's a Royal Diamond Jubilee year, and the Olympics are coming to town -- and the skies see fit to flood the sands. When the people wash away, material must be sought elsewhere, and from the mating rituals in the public toilets to the summer's mixture of lust and lightning, this is anthropology for the digital age. Social nuances, overheard conversations, and the story beneath the surface; Millard is Alan Bennett raised in a game arcade by sarcastic voyeurs, and had people-watching been an Olympic event, his leering neck would hang heavy with the weight of gold.

The Beach Diaries 2012 eBook Stuart Millard

It's funny, it's interesting, it has a genuine voice. It made me go 'oh' and 'ah' and 'hem-hem!'. It includes a description of a person as a 'white D'Angelo Barksdale', which is basically perfect. I liked it. You should like it too.

The Beach Diaries 2012 eBook Stuart Millard Reviews

Being an ex-Southern Belle, I love reading about my home town and, from Stuart's witty and candid descriptions, I gather that not a lot has changed since I left it in 1999! An avid people-watcher, he is spot-on in capturing the randomness that is the British public, whether on holiday or just quietly enjoying the beauty on their doorstep. Not for children, however.

Summary Tangy and tasty, like Scampi and Lemon Nik-Naks.
... Stuart Millard's sophomore beach ballad is simultaneously hilarious and heartfelt. Like that kitten, Millard allows his vehicle to make its stately progress down the path/narrative without interfering unduly with its subject, and like the aforementioned Felis Tonyhawk, Millard never fails to amuse. I can't recommend this work highly enough, I simply don't have enough letters in my personal alphabet. ~! just about does it half-justice. 12 stars. 10 fingers up.
I have read most of the body of work on Millard's blog. Why buy the book then, right? Well the idea that some resolution regarding BSR (If you don't know who this is or what I'm talking about get this and 2011's book), was too much to pass up. If you are new to Millard, my comparison is the intellect of Kubrick in bite-size chunks and, obviously, in literary form. The simplicity of style somehow makes the form of the book resonant more with the reader. Every little vignette, from a couple of sentences to longer entries all reveal a picture of human nature and our secret voyeuristic tendencies.
I liked the original Beach Diaries (I keep trying not to type dairies) a great deal, and this is basically more of the same. I realise this makes it sound like a so-so book, but if you have a craving for ice-cream, would you pass up the chance of guzzling another bowl? Non.

Various action-packed* scenarios ensue
- The quest for Big Shirtless Ron continues.
- Stuart engages in multiple stakeouts of the public bogs, as he wishes to observe the complex dance of the cottagers.
- Some tosser nearly drowns a dog with a speedboat.

... and much more.

I suppose the main difference between this and the original is that Millard has gained a vague sense of responsibility for his subjects. The popularity of the first book means that describing anyone in too much detail (or Continually Leering at Hot Lifeguards Who Possibly Know You're Leering at Them) could have undesirable consequences for all concerned. There's also a bit of a bleak thread running through the pages. Oh, and Stuart knows his Battlefield 3 support guns.

If you'd like to read a lot of quips like the following, then buy the book.

'"I'm gonna go sleep," says a sixty-year-old man, resting his head on the shoulder of his twenty-something Thai bride. She laughs an empty, vacant laugh that comes out of her like the kick of the leg when the doctor hits a knee with a hammer.'
